Diary - November, 2009

Well here I am in November and on the home run. I have put up a list of my radiotherapy appointments in the kitchen and with a broad marker score off each day. I got through the chemo very well but still have a few problems resulting from a compromised immune system. It has all been very manageable though.

Sunday, 1st November, 2009
As it was scheduled to be a very wet day the roofer agreed to come and look at a problem while it was actively raining. He was here before 9 a.m. which was a shock to the system on a Sunday! Went down to Dirleton for lunch and called into Martin & Frost sale on the way back to purchase a new matress. Was a bit tired today probably because we came back from Aberdour at break neck speed yesterday as Mhairi had an evening engagement.

Monday, 2nd November, 2009
Had an appointment late morning with Dr. Bowman the Oncologist who went through my various questions. My Herceptin starts as soon as the radiotherapy finishes i.e. end of November. Had a problem getting my prescription for ongoing pills as they are thin on the ground. Apparently chemists are only getting 10 per cent of their requirements which is a bit worrying! The said "Letrozole" has come down in price recently and is a superior drug to those previously used so I expect there has been a sudden demand. In the end the chemist managed to procure 6 weeks worth so will check with the hospital as to what I should do in a "what if?" situation.
This week will be my first full week of radiotherapy and so far no problems. Had a walk up the Almond in the afternoon.

Did my exercises this morning although did not feel full of energy. Felt much better for having done them. Had my radiotherapy at 1.10 today and went on to "Annabelle's", next to the Sick Kids Hospital, for lunch before making our way to the Eye Pavillion for yet another medical appointment. Better news as the shingles which had ventured into my eye is improving and on the mend. Have to reduce the pills and report back on the 24th November, 2009 - the day before my last radiotherapy - hip, hip.

Wednesday, 4th November, 2009
Housework in the a.m. Cycled to the Western General in time for my appointment at 2.20 p.m. They were behind today so had a bit of a wait. So far no real problems with the radiotherapy but the damaged eye area is driving me mad with itchiness. At least it is not painful!
Driveway coming on and phase 1 should be finished by the end of the week.

Thursday, 5th November, 2009
Did some shopping this morning. Had a sandwich at M&S before my radiotherapy at 1.30. Am really p.......d off today as I discovered the lawyer lost a load of paperwork I had given them. It took them 4 months to discover and to make matters worse they are moving premises this weekend!! Ran out of time to do exercises.

Friday, 6th November, 2009
Did exercises in the morning and although not full of energy to begin with definitely felt the benefit of having done them. Hospital appointment was at 1.10 today and was processed very quickly. No problems so far!

Saturday, 7th November, 2009
Lovely day so drove to St. Monans and walked the Fife Coastal Path through Pittenweem to Anstruther and back. Enjoyed some locally sourced prawns at the famous Anstruther Fish Bar.
Felt a bit tired so had a quiet night in.
Looking over to Pittenweem

Sunday 8th November, 2009
Thought we would go to the Remembrance Service today but was too lazy to be ready in time so watched it on T.V. As it was a beautiful day went for a cycle taking in a light lunch at Izzi's at
the Fountainbridge side of the tow paths. Having felt lazy earlier on I felt the better of having a cycle in the fresh air. Here are Mr. & Mrs. McSwan out with the bairns out for a Sunday afternoon paddle on the canal.
Later, had a very enjoyable meal with Ian and Penny and a silly evening at the Disney Film "Up". It was great fun as it can be viewed at different levels.

Monday, 9th November, 2009
John at dentist a.m. while I did housework. My radio was at 1.30 p.m. but was not taken until nearly an hour later. Met with Mhairi and the boys at Craigie for a coffee in the afternoon. Felt quite good today but did not get around to exercises.

Tuesday, 10thNovember, 2009
Domestic things in the a.m. Radiotherapy at 1.30 followed by exercises in the p.m. Went to the Museum Annual Public Meeting early evening and on to the Olive Brance for a meal.

Wednesday, 11th November, 2009
Business meeting in the morning. Home for lunch and cycled to the Western General for my daily appointment at 1.30. Pretty tedious as one of the machines was not working properly and I had to wait for over an hour for my treatment. Had my weekly meeting with the radiographer afterwards but not much to report as I have not had any problems.....so far. I am exactly half way through the course today.
Have a concern that there may be a further outburst of shingles hovering although not definite. Spoke to Dr. Craig on the telephone to ask whether I should still reduce my pills and eye drops as directed by the Eye Pavillion. We decided to keep the stronger dose going for another 5 days just in case.

Thursday 12th November, 2009
It was a dreach day so opted to do exercises in the a.m. However, it brightened up and I did in fact cycle to W. General for my 1.30 appointment. The other patients look at me with my cycling helmet as if I am daft. I, of course, look back as if I am not! Was taken very quickly today and was back home before 2.30.

Friday, 13th November, 2009
Went into town in the morning to start Christmas shopping. Met Liz and Suzanne for a coffee in the Dome. Went on to the hospital for my 1.30 appointment and was taken quarter of an hour early for a change! Did not fit in any exercise today.
The dizziness I was experiencing towards the end of my chemo is definitely getting better and is only very slight now.

Saturday, 14th November, 2009
Good to have a rest from radiotherapy during Saturday and Sunday. Went into town in the a.m. Joiner was fitting new back door to the garden with we got back. Lazy afternoon apart from a session in the gym. Enjoyed a "Battle of Britain" evening at the golf club with the neighbours.

Sunday, 15th November, 2009
Made it to Church this morning for the early, short service. Had a walk round Clermiston Hill where the view over Edinburgh was stunning. Did domestic things inside and out in the afternoon.
My blog seems to be still working but my email is not and my address book has completely disappeared! Have been on to AOL and was advised to try again today....but still no luck.

Monday, 16th November, 2009
Both did exercises this morning but John felt poorly as the day progressed and has been sick a couple of times. Managed to get an appointment with the Doctor at 5 p.m who said there was a lot of gastro-enteritis around. Just a case of working one's way through it with lots of liquid and light food. Was processed quickly today at radio appointment around 1.30.

Tuesday, 17th November, 2009
John still a bit under the weather although has not been sick again. Boring sort of day with housework in the a.m.; radiotherapy at 1.20 and food shopping on the way back. Still have not had any adverse affects from my treatment and only a week more of it to go!

Wednesday, 18th November, 2009
John still not right but going in the right direction. Did my exercises in the a.m. and some shopping at Craigleith on the way for my treatment at 1.20. Had my weekly meeting with the radiographer but nothing really to report as all is going well. It is apparently normal to have some redening of the skin for a couple of weeks after the radiotherapy has finished. Have had no discomfort so far.

Unfortunately I have been off the air from 18th November and only today, 7th December, 2009 have been able to access the Blog. I am starting a December diary so back up to the top!...
