Conclusion

It seems no time at all since I wrote the last sentence of my "Background". It read "....the sooner I get started, the sooner I will be through it". Here I am at the end of the year with all the nasty treatment behind me. I will still have a "fix" of Herceptin every 3 weeks but apart from the inconvenience of having it administered it causes me no problem at all. I was a bit worried about having to take pills for 5 years but again they are not causing any problems. The Doctor said I might find that I had stiff joints but I will keep up the exercise to counteract that. I would say that it takes me an extra few seconds to go from 0 - 100 but at least I can still go at 100 .....eventually!

What now? I had a dialogue with Gordon McCready whose journey has been so much worse than mine. He said that he always had a goal to focus the mind on and I am going to take his advice and plan my year. We are going to Madeira in February (flights permitting!) and to Vienna and Budapest with the Theatre Patrons in June. These are the only events that are fixed at this moment but I look forward to sitting down with John to decide what our other priorities will be. Top of the list would be a family holiday with our children and grandchildren which now amount to (including spouses) 16.

Will I ever cycle from John O'Groats to Landsend? We are going to get a date in the diary to discuss this with Liz and Lewis Wood and work out a training plan. Might even try the London to Paris cycle but maybe that is too soon. I would also like to have a go at Tai Chi (spelling?) and put some effort into coming to terms with golf.

On the less physical front I think I will have a go at learning to play the accordian which if nothing else must be a good brain exercise (if I can find it!). As John and I both have Skye connections I would like to do a Highland Tour in conjunction with Family Tree research. I have many other things on my wish list although I know I will not manage them all in the short term.

I have to stop for a moment and think of the people I know who are still going through this and my heart goes out to them as it is no picnic. I recognise I have been lucky as I did not have to go through the traumas of a mastectomy but for those who do there is so much expertise out there in the form of reconstruction. Just think - 90% of Holywood women embark on such operations by choice! I have also been lucky to have such strong support from family and friends and would like to thank them all especially John (who will never read this anyway!) for getting me through it.

What advice would I pass on from my experience? For me the main thing that has helped me is keeping up some form of exercise. I separated "really not feeling like exercise" from "cannot be bothered doing exercise". When I experienced the latter I pushed myself just a little bit and generally felt the better of it. Writing a diary, or blog in my case, was very therapeutic and I counted down the days rather than dwelling on the whole journey. I do not know what is in front of me but we are all on "The List" somewhere and I am not going sit around worrying about it.

I am looking forward to putting 2009 behind me and I am now drawing a line under the whole year. 2010 is the beginning of the rest of my life and I am looking forward to knocking the hell out of it!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!

Diary - December, 2009

Everyone has been spared the diary for a few weeks as our router has been on the blink which prevented access to the internet. Today I hoovered in the computer room and lo and behold the internet light came back on. I think the moral of the story is that I should hoover more often! If I do go quiet again it is because the room needs another hoover.

Can't believe I have made it to December. The radiotherapy did not cause me any problems and the day after my treatment finished we left to go and visit two branches of the family. Here we are with the latest grandson, Mathew and Donna the dog:-

After visiting Morag, Phil and Mathew in Essex we went on to see Marsali, Alister and two older grandchildren. It was wonderful to be with everyone after being confined to barracks for so long.

Monday, 7th December, 2009
Domestic a.m. and off to the hospital for my nuclear heart scan. I feel I have done full circle as the test was a re-run of the one I had before my treatment began. I had dropped from a score of 68 to 63 which is pretty good considering I have been subjected to cardio toxic chemotherapy. I was told that a top athlete would be 70 and that most people are around 50. Maybe I will be able to do that John O'Groats run after all! Did my exercises in the p.m. as I have been feeling a bit stiff having been out of my r0utine recently. John out at Jack Perry's retirement bash this evening.

Tuesday 8th December, 2009
John had a meeting in town and I did some shopping. Met for lunch in the New Club. Did some exercises late afternoon and started the Christmas Cards at last. Slightly apprehensive about Thursday when I get my first Herceptin. I will be in for 6 hours but only for the first couple of sessions while they gauge my reaction. After that the job is contracted out and someone will come to the house every 3 weeks to give me an injection or perhaps it is a drip?

Wednesday 9th December, 2009
Disruptive day clearing up after the electrician; Martin & Frost delivery and Virgin installation but just as well to get it all over with in one. Had a most enjoyable evening at the theatre with the Patrons who were invited to "The Corstorphine Nativity Play" including a tour of the set.

Thursday 10th December, 2009
Another pin-cusion day at Ward 1 for my Herceptin. It works by interfering with one of the ways in which cancer cells divide and grow and also attracts immune cells to help destroy any potential "nasties".
Was twiddling my fingers this morning in the hospital and decided to send a text to daughter, Morag whose baby has had some digestive problems. She said she did not receive it so my apologies to the person who received my text asking how the "poos" were today!

Friday, 11th December, 2009
Had lunch with Mhairi. Had booked at the Ritz (don't let the name fool you!) but they had a power cut so went to her office canteen across the road. Had a look round the Gyle in the p.m. Were invited to George Robertson's lecture in memory of Ken Munro at the Parliament in the early evening and finished off with a meal at the West End at "L'escargot Bleu".

Saturday 12th December, 2009
Not very eventful day but had a walk round and lunch at Ocean Terminal. Finished the Christmas cards and did a session in the gym late afternoon. Quiet night in.

Sunday, 13th December, 2009
Made it to Church for the short service. Did food shopping and had a visit from Mhairi to sort out and wrap children's presents. Went to John and Fiona Hutchison for buffet lunch which was a lovely Christmas event.

Monday, 14th December, 2009
Visit from Heather and did exercises together in the gym. Mhairi and the boys joined us for lunch and helped to dress the Christmas Tree (that was the theory anyway!) John was at a meeting a.m. and over lunch. Have not had any adverse affects after my Herceptin - long may it continue. Next "fix" should have been 30th December! As there is more leeway with Herceptin I have been able to change that date for the 6th January, 2010. Looks like I am on the "home run" and plan to finish this blog at the end of the week as there is not a lot more to say.

Tuesday, 15th December, 2009
Exercises in the a.m. Went to "Harmeny" for coffee and mince pies in the p.m. Great to see all the old "Friends" - Ron, Malcolm, Kerr and Rosemary. Now I know exactly where Kerr and Rosemary live on the Fife coast we will look forward to a cuppa the next time we are passing! Was sorry not to see Peter who was unwell today.

Wednesday, 16th December, 2009
Bitty day waiting for the electrician to put in the new outside lights and also the man to fix the tumbler drier. Very special evening at the cabaret/dinner dance at Prestonfield House Stables. Thought I would put on some spray colour to make up for not being allowed in the sun this year. I forgot to put on the second coat so there was not much change of hue on myself but I have to say my bedding had a wonderful mediterranean tan!

Thursday, 17th December, 2009
Gym in the morning. Very frustrating time as I tried to book flights online with lots of problems too lengthy to go in to. Globespan has gone bust so we have managed to get flights from Standsted for our trip to Madeira in February......I think!
Met with the landscape gardener in Fife in the p.m. to pick plants for our new look in front of the house. Went on to Blackhall for a coffee in M & S and some shopping. Sleating this afternoon.

Tuesday, 22nd December, 2009
John and I met Mhairi for lunch at the New Club and did a bit of last minute Christmas shopping. Mhairi and the two children are staying with us now until Christmas which has the beginnings of being a white one.

Wednesday, 23rd December, 2009
Woke up to 6 inches of snow on the drive. Quite a rude awakening having to get up and shovel snow just to be able to get the car out. Big day today as we took Mhairi and the children on the Santa Clause Cruise at Ratho. The barge was unable to leave its mooring so Santa had to be transported from his island situated further up the canal. Went to MacDonalds for lunch (yuck!), followed by some sledging between the golf courses. You have heard about Mummy kissing Santa Clause? Well, now watch Granny dancing with him!

What is she doing?
(Grandsons Benjamin and Thomas)
Back to the top for the Grand Finale!

Diary - November, 2009

Well here I am in November and on the home run. I have put up a list of my radiotherapy appointments in the kitchen and with a broad marker score off each day. I got through the chemo very well but still have a few problems resulting from a compromised immune system. It has all been very manageable though.

Sunday, 1st November, 2009
As it was scheduled to be a very wet day the roofer agreed to come and look at a problem while it was actively raining. He was here before 9 a.m. which was a shock to the system on a Sunday! Went down to Dirleton for lunch and called into Martin & Frost sale on the way back to purchase a new matress. Was a bit tired today probably because we came back from Aberdour at break neck speed yesterday as Mhairi had an evening engagement.

Monday, 2nd November, 2009
Had an appointment late morning with Dr. Bowman the Oncologist who went through my various questions. My Herceptin starts as soon as the radiotherapy finishes i.e. end of November. Had a problem getting my prescription for ongoing pills as they are thin on the ground. Apparently chemists are only getting 10 per cent of their requirements which is a bit worrying! The said "Letrozole" has come down in price recently and is a superior drug to those previously used so I expect there has been a sudden demand. In the end the chemist managed to procure 6 weeks worth so will check with the hospital as to what I should do in a "what if?" situation.
This week will be my first full week of radiotherapy and so far no problems. Had a walk up the Almond in the afternoon.

Tuesday, 3rd November, 2009
Did my exercises this morning although did not feel full of energy. Felt much better for having done them. Had my radiotherapy at 1.10 today and went on to "Annabelle's", next to the Sick Kids Hospital, for lunch before making our way to the Eye Pavillion for yet another medical appointment. Better news as the shingles which had ventured into my eye is improving and on the mend. Have to reduce the pills and report back on the 24th November, 2009 - the day before my last radiotherapy - hip, hip.

Wednesday, 4th November, 2009
Housework in the a.m. Cycled to the Western General in time for my appointment at 2.20 p.m. They were behind today so had a bit of a wait. So far no real problems with the radiotherapy but the damaged eye area is driving me mad with itchiness. At least it is not painful!
Driveway coming on and phase 1 should be finished by the end of the week.

Thursday, 5th November, 2009
Did some shopping this morning. Had a sandwich at M&S before my radiotherapy at 1.30. Am really p.......d off today as I discovered the lawyer lost a load of paperwork I had given them. It took them 4 months to discover and to make matters worse they are moving premises this weekend!! Ran out of time to do exercises.

Friday, 6th November, 2009
Did exercises in the morning and although not full of energy to begin with definitely felt the benefit of having done them. Hospital appointment was at 1.10 today and was processed very quickly. No problems so far!

Saturday, 7th November, 2009
Lovely day so drove to St. Monans and walked the Fife Coastal Path through Pittenweem to Anstruther and back. Enjoyed some locally sourced prawns at the famous Anstruther Fish Bar.
Felt a bit tired so had a quiet night in.
Looking over to Pittenweem

Sunday 8th November, 2009
Thought we would go to the Remembrance Service today but was too lazy to be ready in time so watched it on T.V. As it was a beautiful day went for a cycle taking in a light lunch at Izzi's at
the Fountainbridge side of the tow paths. Having felt lazy earlier on I felt the better of having a cycle in the fresh air. Here are Mr. & Mrs. McSwan out with the bairns out for a Sunday afternoon paddle on the canal.
Later, had a very enjoyable meal with Ian and Penny and a silly evening at the Disney Film "Up". It was great fun as it can be viewed at different levels.

Monday, 9th November, 2009
John at dentist a.m. while I did housework. My radio was at 1.30 p.m. but was not taken until nearly an hour later. Met with Mhairi and the boys at Craigie for a coffee in the afternoon. Felt quite good today but did not get around to exercises.

Tuesday, 10thNovember, 2009
Domestic things in the a.m. Radiotherapy at 1.30 followed by exercises in the p.m. Went to the Museum Annual Public Meeting early evening and on to the Olive Brance for a meal.

Wednesday, 11th November, 2009
Business meeting in the morning. Home for lunch and cycled to the Western General for my daily appointment at 1.30. Pretty tedious as one of the machines was not working properly and I had to wait for over an hour for my treatment. Had my weekly meeting with the radiographer afterwards but not much to report as I have not had any problems.....so far. I am exactly half way through the course today.
Have a concern that there may be a further outburst of shingles hovering although not definite. Spoke to Dr. Craig on the telephone to ask whether I should still reduce my pills and eye drops as directed by the Eye Pavillion. We decided to keep the stronger dose going for another 5 days just in case.

Thursday 12th November, 2009
It was a dreach day so opted to do exercises in the a.m. However, it brightened up and I did in fact cycle to W. General for my 1.30 appointment. The other patients look at me with my cycling helmet as if I am daft. I, of course, look back as if I am not! Was taken very quickly today and was back home before 2.30.

Friday, 13th November, 2009
Went into town in the morning to start Christmas shopping. Met Liz and Suzanne for a coffee in the Dome. Went on to the hospital for my 1.30 appointment and was taken quarter of an hour early for a change! Did not fit in any exercise today.
The dizziness I was experiencing towards the end of my chemo is definitely getting better and is only very slight now.

Saturday, 14th November, 2009
Good to have a rest from radiotherapy during Saturday and Sunday. Went into town in the a.m. Joiner was fitting new back door to the garden with we got back. Lazy afternoon apart from a session in the gym. Enjoyed a "Battle of Britain" evening at the golf club with the neighbours.

Sunday, 15th November, 2009
Made it to Church this morning for the early, short service. Had a walk round Clermiston Hill where the view over Edinburgh was stunning. Did domestic things inside and out in the afternoon.
My blog seems to be still working but my email is not and my address book has completely disappeared! Have been on to AOL and was advised to try again today....but still no luck.

Monday, 16th November, 2009
Both did exercises this morning but John felt poorly as the day progressed and has been sick a couple of times. Managed to get an appointment with the Doctor at 5 p.m who said there was a lot of gastro-enteritis around. Just a case of working one's way through it with lots of liquid and light food. Was processed quickly today at radio appointment around 1.30.

Tuesday, 17th November, 2009
John still a bit under the weather although has not been sick again. Boring sort of day with housework in the a.m.; radiotherapy at 1.20 and food shopping on the way back. Still have not had any adverse affects from my treatment and only a week more of it to go!

Wednesday, 18th November, 2009
John still not right but going in the right direction. Did my exercises in the a.m. and some shopping at Craigleith on the way for my treatment at 1.20. Had my weekly meeting with the radiographer but nothing really to report as all is going well. It is apparently normal to have some redening of the skin for a couple of weeks after the radiotherapy has finished. Have had no discomfort so far.

Unfortunately I have been off the air from 18th November and only today, 7th December, 2009 have been able to access the Blog. I am starting a December diary so back up to the top!...

Diary - October 2009

Here we go through October. This blog has become very boring but I think I will continue it until I get through my radiotherapy so not long to go! My reason for having this blog is that it has been very good therapy for me in that I feel each day I tick a box off. It gives me a medical tracking and keeps the family who are spread around informed. Some friends have followed it too and Denise says that it is as rivetting as the "Archers".
That about says it all?!

Thursday 1st October, 2009
Managed to get someone to remove the wasps' nest before the driveway work starts middle of October. Pleasant day so had a walk through the Dalmeny Estate from the S. Queensferry side. Looking forward to completing my chemo tomorrow.

Friday, 2nd October, 2009
Arrived early at the Western General for my blood test to check the neurofils. The nurse had to have two goes at inserting the cannula as the first one hit a valve and she had to start over again. Waited for results until 11a.m. to find they were sadly only 0.45. Feeling quite disappointed to be sent home with nothing more than a very bruised hand. Hopefully it should not delay the start of my radio assuming I get the chemo at the beginning of the week. Went for a carvery lunch at Lauriston Farm and a walk in the rain to Crammond in the p.m. Feeling a bit tired this afternoon.

Saturday, 3rd October, 2009
Went into town in the morning. Pretty horrible day so spent some time designing the covers for my Fife video..... and relaxing. I should have mentioned yesterday that I went into the "Maggie" Centre for the first time as I had time to kill whilst waiting for my blood results. Another patient I meet from time to time drools over the handsome man who runs the place. Now I can at least give an opinion but John was singularly unimpressed! I thought the place looked like a set from "Playschool" with lots of coloured cushions. Didn't know whether to sit under the arched window or the square one!

Sunday, 4th October, 2009
F0od shopping a.m. Lovely day but definitely a touch of Autumn creeping in so our cycling days will be reducing in the not too distant future. Cycled to Almondell Country Park and had a sandwich and a coffee from the shop. The lady in the shop is becoming quite chatty now that we seem to be regulars. Cycled back on the tow paths and home via Murrayfield which gave us some 3 hours of cycling.

Monday, 5th October, 2009
Call from Ward 1 first thing to say they did not have a slot for me but that I would definitely get an appointment this week. In the end I have arranged to have a blood test at my local surgery tomorrow which will hopefully allow me to get the chemo on Wednesday. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Tuesday, 6th October, 2009
Have been given an appointment at the hospital tomorrow at 11 a.m. Had my blood done at Cramond in the a.m. and have to assume that it is OK to go ahead tomorrow as I have not heard otherwise. Visited Fiona this morning. Did not do any gym work but cleaned both cars.

Wednesday, 7th October, 2009
Had the last of my chemos today. It should have been a happy day but it has been dampened as a family in-law goes in for a mastectomy today and another friend has just had bad news. My thoughts are with them and I can't think of anything else today.

Thursday, 8th October, 2009
Dropped John off near the dentist and did some shopping. To mark the end of my chemo he spoiled me by treating me to an outfit from Jaegar. Lovely Autumn day so had a couple of hours' walk which included the Japanese garden at Lauriston Castle. It is the first time we have been there and it was just wonderful. If you have not been it is well worth a visit! Met Rev. Barr as we were leaving who had dropped by to see how things were. I have really been so lucky to have such support from all those around me.

Friday, 9th October, 2009
Took a day trip up to Pitlochry to check out the house. Went on to Bruar for lunch and walk round. Eyelashes are coming in quite well now and hair still thickening although still not much length. Unfortunately I am also getting the odd hair on the chin so could be a Werewolf by Christmas!!

Perthshire is beautiful in the Autumn and this is the view from our window over to the Church known as Mount Zion. Unfortunately the garden in the picture is not ours but that of a Mr. Panten. His brother was apparently a well known golfer.

Saturday, 10th October, 2009
Drove down to Longniddry with the bikes and cycled the John Muir Way to Gullane for light lunch and then on to North Berwick. Met up with Jim and Irene and went to the "Dakota" for a meal in the evening. Mhairi's birthday today but did not see her as the children still had colds/ear infection. She had "bigger fish to fry" anyway as she had arranged to spend the day with friend Vari.

Sunday, 11th October, 2009
Food shopping in the a.m. Another reasonable day so drove to Balerno and walked round a couple of lochs including Threipmuir and back via the Black Hill. It took a good couple of hours which meant I at least slept well last night especially as the steroids are probably out of my system by now.

Look how low the water level is in the loch - I thought we had lots of rain!

Monday, 12th October, 2009
Dropped John off for his dental appointment. Had an hour's local walk in the p.m. I should have registered some days ago that I felt a sensitive spot on my forehead which I had put down to having bumped my head. I had expected it to turn into a bruise but instead a slight rash appeared which I still discounted. By last night it was looking a bit angry so thought it best to run it by the Oncology Registrar at the Western General. It was around an inch or so in length and could best be likened to a cluster of cold sores in appearance. I did not have any temperature and the advice came back that it was not something that would be a problem in the short term i.e. overnight. I was also told that it was unlilkely to be the Herpes virus. Dum-de-dum-de-dum-de-dum...... another "Archers" cliff-hanger!

Tuesday, 13th October, 2009
Although I slept reasonably well I was aware of the rash nipping a bit overnight along with a slight headache on one side. Managed to get an appointment with the Doctor who confirmed that it was of the cold sore ilk, but more specifically Shingles. Apparently Shingles only affects one side which I am unfortunately (and perhaps stupidly) relating to Strokes. I mentioned an article which I read in the paper somewhere over the weekend which said something like one in three people suffering from Shingles go on to have Strokes. Not good!! I have registered this but am not really worrying about it as this research is still in its infancy and has not been processed through the official medical channels yet. The Doctor confirmed this. Am waiting for my medication to be delivered to the chemist this p.m. as he did not have the correct dose in stock. Have also had another blood test to check my immune system. On the positive side I suppose one is bound to have some problems by the end of the chemo where one's resistance is at its lowest ebb. Still feeling fine in myself!

Wednesday, 14th October, 2009
Dr. Price telephoned late yesterday to say that my blood neutrofils were well over 3 which is a relief. Have started the medication which I have to take in double strength. Still getting short stabbing pains in my head but managed to sleep quite well.
Suzanne came over this morning for a coffee and chat. Watched the video of our Fife Coastal Walk. Walked to the Barnton shops in the p.m. and did 20 mins anaerobic exercise only in the gym. Feeling reasonably well although a bit tired this afternoon.

Thursday, 15th October, 2009
The stabbing head pains are still with me although less intense and I am aware of a sensitive area on the jaw line behind my left ear. Also get the occasional "electrical impulse" going from the left eyebrow down the side of my nose. I am just remembering that the CMF chemo, when administered, gave the sensation of having sinus. It may be that the shingles have attacked the weakest point.
I am feeling reasonably full of beans in myself and completed some housework and a full session in the gym this morning. Did some baking for the freezer this afternoon as we had to be in for the electrician anyway.

Friday 16th October, 2009
By late evening felt that I was a bit puffy, and sensitive to the touch, over my left eye. It is funny how any problems seem to manifest themselves either at the weekend or late at night. My concern is that if the virus goes down the eye route it can cause blindness. Made a call to the Registrar at the hospital (yet again!) who confirmed that I should just keep taking the pills and that there was nothing more she could give me. John insisted that I go and see my local doctor just to talk over what I should/or should not be doing. Saw Dr. Joliffe who went through it all and concluded that it would be very unlikely to get to my eye. He is very good and reassuring as he takes time to go through things in detail. He has prescribed eye ointment which I will add to my "repertoire". Still feeling well in myself although a slight background headache which is bearable.
Went out to Corstorphine to see the man who is making our new gates and on to Craigie for a coffee. Am going to have a lazy day.

Tuesday, 20th October, 2009
You will have noticed the weekend has not been commented on. The reason is that during Friday evening I developed a temperature and as it can rocket very quickly I was taken in to the Western General. The highest it got to was 38.1 so I did not feel too bad in myself. I think I was a swine flu' suspect and went through the various processes to check it out. I have been very impressed with the Health Service and felt that I was extremely well looked after. I was confined to my room which I only discovered on Saturday afternoon. During the morning I had gone walkabouts to get myself a decent coffee from the shop. The shop immediately below me was shut for electrical repairs and I was directed to another one which was quite a distance away and accross the road! I had not realised that I was not supposed to launch myself on the unsuspecting public but at least it gave me a bit of exercise.
I was taken for a chest xray in the p.m. and much disgruntled that I had to sit in a chair and be pushed as again it was quite a distance to the xray department. This was not made any easier by being accompanied by two equally disgruntled chair pushers. The lady who was in charge of me was rather large and elderly and had insisted that one of the kitchen porters take me up the ramp as it was quite steep. He was also rather large and I really felt I should be pushing him in case he had a heart attack. It had been a quiet day for him but now that he had to get the food trolleys out he had the added chore of pushing me up the ramp!
When we arrived at our destination my lady pusher sat at a distance as she was determined that she was not a second class citizen and that the the male radiologist could push me in. I diffused a possible situation by suggesting that I just walk in which was a solution that everyone found acceptable. By contrast the nursing staff could not have been more pleasant.
The hospital managed to get me an appointment at the Eye Pavillion on Monday afternoon after which I was allowed to go home as my temperature had gone back to normal. It was confirmed that I did have a bit of an infection in the eye but it was secondary and did not affect the back of the eye. I have now been given steroid drops for a week.
I was able to escape getting anti-biotics but have been given three days of neutrofil injections which have allowed me fight my own corner. The district nurse is coming in today and tomorrow to administer the remaining injections (in the stomach - ouch!) After the first one, my neutrofils were up to 6.7 (7 being the maximum, I believe) Have an appointment with Dr. Craig this afternoon to sort out my pills which have to be co-ordinated with the eye drops.
I still look as if I have done (perhaps) half a round with Mike Tyson but it is certainly getting better.
Strange thing happened this afternoon. I had been sitting at my computer when the door bell went. I jumped up to answer and my legs caved in under me and I felt a sort of cramp at the base of my spine. Mentioned it to Dr. Craig but of course it had passed by then. Could be that I have been sitting for 3 days - must try to do some exercise tomorrow.

Wednesday, 21st October, 2009
The digging up of the driveway in full swing in preparation for the new blocking. Virgin co-ordinated to feed cables through to the house at the relevant moment.
Still OK today although pulse is high. My blood pressure was 114/62 this morning but pulse was 91! My normal is 65 - 75 but I have noticed consistently that my pulse has been high through the chemo months. In training it can be assumed that one's pulse can go up to 220 minus one's age so I do not think I am in any danger. Did a full, but careful, stint in the gym and feel much better. Nurse arrived to give me final jab.
Had a carvery lunch and went on to do the food shopping and a mouch round the other shops at Craigleith.

Thursday 22nd October, 2009
Blood pressure still in normal range but pulse still in the 90's which is strange. Feel OK but have decided not to go to the gym today. Nasty scab on forehead is healing quite well although I still avoid getting makeup on the upper left quarter of my face - I suppose I could audition for "Phantom of the Opera"! Eye is almost normal but have to use the steroid drops until my appointment on Tuesday. Went for an hour's walk locally in the p.m. Spent some time playing the piano today but Liszt's "Liebestraum" is still lacking and "Alfie" is still wondering "what's it all about"
Have left a car at a neighbour's as the driveway is still in process. Have to be out early tomorrow to get my tattoos in preparation for the radiotherapy next Wednesday.

Friday 23rd October, 2009
Day had a hesitant start as a muckle great articulated lorry arrived from "Marshalls" with our blocking stones for the new driveway. We had specifically asked for small lorries which could get up the brae. Apologies to the neighbours for the "pop art" which had to be left in Barnton Avenue West in the short term.
Arrived at the hospital very early for my Simulator appointment but took another attack of the leg buckling incident I experienced on Tuesday afternoon. It was very alarming but I was able to see an oncologist who was able to allay my fears as other people had reported similar exepriences following on from GCSF injections (neutrofil top up). I am happier now that there is a reason. She also verified that the high pulse was to do with the chemo churning up my system. The shingles scab is disappearing like snow of a dyke so immune system must be working overtime.
I was taken into an Xray type room and positioned on a table in the appropriate position. One has to lie completely still for 25 minutes whilst they mark out the area which has to be treated. A large circular plate of around 2' in diameter moves round into different positions rather like the rising and setting of the sun. It is not claustrophobic as nothing comes down close to the face. Probably the most unpleasant part is getting the tattoos where they have to prick the skin with a permanent dye. I was hoping for a thistle but had to settle for 7 strategically placed freckles!

Saturday, 24th October, 2009
The work continues and drive is like a quagmire today with all the rain. Virgin inserting cable on Monday.
No more funny turns today but had a lazy afternoon. Went into town in the morning to do bits of shopping and enjoy a coffee in George Street.
Enjoyed an evening at the local golf club with Jim and Irene.

Do not know why this blog suddenly changes its format - it did the same thing last month. Maybe it is something to do with the numbers of pictures I have added.

Oops - it has settled down again!

Sunday, 25th October, 2009
It would have been Dad's 89th birthday today. Clocks changed last night so no excuses not to have time to do my exercises this morning. Went into town to return boots I had bought yesterday and had lunch at the New Club. Was ready to put my feet up in the afternoon.

Monday, 26th October, 2009
John busy with various tradesmen this morning. Went for a cycle with Heather taking in the Japanese Garden at Lauriston Castle.

Pulse rate seems to be coming down nearer to my normal range. Temperature and blood pressure all normal. Have contacted "Standard Life" Health Insurance who are going to re-imburse me for the three nights in hospital as I did not use my Policy.

Tuesday, 27th October, 2009
Had to be at the Eye Pavillion by 10.30. Went by bus from Silverknowes which took an hour because of road works etc.! Lots of hanging about and did not get home until after 2 p.m. Not altogether happy with my eye so have another appoinment next week but meantime I have to reduce the dosage of medication.
Back at the ranch Virgin arrived to complete the connection to the house. Also posts prepared for new gates and compacting going full swing in preparation for the new blocking.

Wednesday, 28th October, 2009
Did a circuit in the gym in the a.m. Had early lunch to be at the W. General in time for my 1.20 radiotherapy appointment. Very similar experience to the Simulator session last Friday. The session tomorrow has been cancelled as they are servicing the machine. It means that I will now finish a day later on the 25th November. Had a lazy afternoon.

Thursday, 29th October, 2009
Did lots of housework this a.m. so did not do gym as well. Only had a walk up to the shops for the paper in the afternoon but I feel I should pace myself until I know how the radiotherapy will affect me.

Friday, 30th October, 2009
Hit the ground running this morning with tradesman to fix the conservatory floor first thing. Went out to Chesser to finalise gate design; on to Macro followed by a bite of lunch at Lauriston Farm before my radiology appointment at 1.20 p.m. Have been told to keep up the exercises as shoulder may get stiff.
Driveway progressing and have had to get extra milk, sugar and tea to keep up with demand.

Saturday 31st October, 2009
It was a lovely morning so set out with John and Mhairi to cycle to Aberdour for lunch. I wanted to get a picture of Mhairi and myself on the Forth Bridge so stopped a passing cyclist who seemed to be ambling along. John had cycled on and did not hear us! I felt dreadful as the chap I asked to take the picture was disabled and to get on and off the bike was a major operation. He was very nice and said that it was good for him to try and do things but he was probably the only disabled person to be out on a bike that day and I had to pick him!

Decided to show John and Mhairi from the Forth Road Bridge as she is far to skinny for me to stand next to. The other picture is looking over to Inchcolme Island from nearly Aberdour.

Back to the top for November!

Diary - September

It is September and I am on the home run now as far as the chemo is concerned. Hair has gone from a "struggle" to a "grizzle" but certainly more roots jumping into action. Problem is with my type of hair it will curl in on itself so will be a long time until it is usable. I have really managed to get through this remarkably well and am now quietly worrying that it has not been hard enough and that maybe the chemo is not doing its job. On the other hand, the fact that my neutrofils have been consistantly low suggests that something relevant is happening!

Monday 1st September, 2009
Did exercises first thing but have decided to stop the side stepper as I felt that I had pulled something slightly over the last week or so. Will stick to the straight movements in the meantime. Fairly mundane sort of day with heavy showers so started work on "Fife Coastal Path Walk" DVD which I did with the "girls" about a year ago! Still have a few bits and pieces of John's to do but am waiting for input from others.

Tuesday 2nd September, 2009
Exercises first thing felt a bit easier than yesterday. Went out to Hermiston Gate and on to the Garden Centre for a salad lunch. Another "iffy" day so nothing much to report. Recently finished Barack Obama's book "Dreams from my Father". Found it quite fascinating as I felt his life story well equipped him to do the job he does.

Wednesday 3rd September, 2009
Not just a rainy day but a M & S Rainy day! As Sod's Law would have it, it was the day we were booked in to take one of the bikes in to get puncture mended in the a.m.
Appointment at the hospital at 2 p.m. for routine check-up and talk about the next stage which is radiotherapy. Last chemo is 30th September so will be given a date around 3 weeks after that to start my treatment. I have been given a booklet (and talk) about all the things that can go wrong e.g. causing a crack in the ribs and damaging part of the lung. Apparently this is rare but I suppose they have to "cover their butts" although I did not find it helpful! Decided to wait and deal with any (or no) problems as they arise rather than read their book. Had a dialogue about my dizziness (which is lessening) and possible osteopath sessions. It was their opinion that the dizziness was something to do with the middle ear e.g. laborynthitis and that I should wait until the chemo was finished before doing anything about the back problems. I think that has improved though now that I have stopped doing the side stepper.

Thursday4th September, 2009
Yet another wet day so exercises and housework completed in the morning. Went into town for some shopping and lunch at Cafe Andaluz. Serious rain has found yet another way into the conservatory which is being fixed this afternoon.

Friday 5th September, 2009
Went into town in the morning to see the "Discovery of Spain" collection from Goya to Picasso at the National Gallery. Day proved to be better than expected so managed a good walk in the afternoon locally.

Saturday 6th September, 2009
Food shopping in the a.m. Went for a 2 hour bike ride in the afternoon taking in the Dalmeny Estate which has now been opened to cyclists and is part of the cycling network. Our route was quite hilly but felt very good afterwards in spite of that.

Monday 7th September, 2009
As it was dry spent some time with Mhairi and the boys. Went to the Rose Garden and swing park at Saughton in the morning and spent the afternoon in the garden with the children. Had my usual pre chemo blood test in the morning.
Spent an interesting evening at the Museum with Jackie Stewart who was unveiling one of his old cars.

Tuesday, 8th September, 2009
Bad news on the blood test again as the neutrofils are only 0.4 but I suppose I am getting to the end of this part of the treatment. Posed the question as to whether I should wait another couple of days before getting chemo. Suggestion was rejected so will go in tomorrow at 11 a.m. as planned.
My sister visited today and did exercises with me. The three of us went out for lunch.

Wednesday, 9th September, 2009
Having spent 2 hours in Ward 1 today was sent home as my blood levels were not good enough i.e. 0.59. Have a further appointment on Friday so here's hoping I make it this time. Felt a bit dumped today as it will delay the whole process. Never mind, got the housework done this afternoon.

Thursday, 10th September, 2009
A dry day for a change so we went for a cycle to Malleny Gardens at Balerno which takes about an hour and a half to get there and only an hour to get back as it is downish hill on the return journey. Bought provisions in the local supermarket and enjoyed a picnic in the gardens before cycling back.

Friday, 11th September, 2009
Another day hanging around the hospital. Was asked to be there at 1 p.m. for blood test but did not get that done until 2 p.m. Managed to have a sandwich before my chemo which was administered about 3 p.m. Big relief that my neutrofils were up to 2 so no antibiotics this time.

Saturday, 12th September, 2009
Have had no reaction this time to the chemo yesterday and feeling pretty good. Was having another look at the Cancer Booklet handout and am slightly worried that I still have some reddening of the skin in connection with my operations. I note that there is a rare condition called inflammatory breast cancer caused by cells blocking lymph channels. It is too easy to become paranoid but I think I will have a dialogue with the medical people to put my mind at rest.
Went to a super 70th birthday lunch at Invcrleith and met lots of people who we used to see regularly at business dinners etc. but had not seen for some time. Great catching up with all the chat.

Sunday, 13th September, 2009
Food shopping in the morning. Cycled to Inverleith to deliver "thank you" letter and on to Newhaven where we had a salad outside in the sunshine (believe it or not). Went on for a leisurely cycle to Leith Links and back home by the cycle tracks which was not easy as we were against the flow of the Glasgow - Edinburgh charity cyclists in their hundreds.

Monday, 14th September, 2009
Domestic sort of day sorting out the "Humax" and TV aerial which is not performing properly. Cycled to cleaners at Blackhall which gave me some exercise today.

Tuesday, 15th September, 2009
It would have been my parents' wedding anniversary today so Heather and myself went through to the Greenock Cemetery to pay our respects. Went on to meet friend Sheila Mumford for lunch at the Gourock Yacht Club. People in the West always say that "you should have been here yesterday - the weather was good yesterday!" I have to document here and now that we had a wonderful lunch looking out over the Clyde in sunshine. Great to catch up with Sheila as we always pick up where we left off. She always tells me that one should take up something new every year (hers being singing at the moment) so I have decided to have a go at the accordion after the Christmas season is over. (Be very afraid!)

Wednesday, 16th September, 2009
The Wendy House is up and we had a leisurely cycle to The Cloth Shop at Bonnington to get some bin end material for curtains. The girls in the family will love it but if the boys object to the pink and blue mermaids I have wasted my £4! Cycled on to Ocean Terminal hoping to have a light lunch at Baxters. Unfortunately other people of a certain age have realised that one can have a pleasant light lunch there so did not get in. Made do with a baked potato and on for a coffee at "Porto Fi". Bought some fresh fish from Newhaven for a stir-fry tonight.

Thursday 17th September, 2009

Had a physio session with Tanya at 10.00 a.m. Was a wee bit tired afterwards so we had a leisurely drive to Dirleton for lunch and short walk. Were able to get the roof down as it was a lovely sunny day. Had a dialogue with Tanya about the problem I had with my feet some months ago (plantar faschiitis - spelling?). Tanya is concerned that one of my hips is rotating differently from the other and I am thinking it may be the inserts that the podiatrist gave me. I think I will try and do without them or at least limit their use.

Friday 18th September, 2009

Mainly domestic day with any plans discarded as my temporary filling fell out. Spent most of the afternoon organising and waiting for dental appointment. Will get it dealt with properly once my treatment is through. Isn't that something to look forward to !

Saturday 19th September, 2009

John dealt with tradesman who arrived to give quote for possible driveway work. Did my gym exercises after which we drove to St. Monans to have lunch at the Seafood restaurant. The weather was miserable when we left but beautiful when we arrived at St. Monans. Enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the front by the picturesque cottages. Was a wee bit tired yesterday but back on full throttle again today.

Sunday 20th September, 2009

It looked a lovely sunny day so decided to take the bikes over the Forth Bridge and round the coastal route to Aberdour. Had a light lunch at Aberdour before returning. Life was really enjoyable until one bright spark suggested that it might be interesting to visit North Queensferry before going back over the bridge. I was going to say the day went downhill from then on but it would be more acurate to say it went uphill from then on as we missed the flat off-road path I had remembered from my walk to St. Andrews last year. Furthermore the "Ben Nevis" we found ourselves on had no purpose other than to drop us back at sea level on the other side! We decided that instead of retracing our tracks we would continue on the more reasonable road and access the Bridge from the other side. That would have been a good idea if we had not been confronted with a sign on arrival which told us the bridge was shut to cyclists on that side. Our hearts sank as we had to maneouve our way back down to the "gunwales" of South Queensferry where we could look up and view the bridge somewhere among the stars of the galaxy. Sixty six (I counted them) steep steps separated us from the correct side of the Bridge which by this time was host to a gale force wind. Isn't it funny how things can quickly go from bad to worse? - no! I think perhaps I will be having a leisurely day tomorrow.

Monday 21st September, 2009

Had an out of the blue telephone call from an old friend of John who was in Edinburgh for a few days. Agreed to meet and had lunch at the Whisky Society in Queen Street. Feeling fine after the trip yesterday but am going to have a day exercise free.

Tuesday, 22nd September, 2009

A couple of appointments with a view to having the drive redone with blocking. Apart from that a fairly domestic day with exercises in the p.m.

Wesnedsay, 23rd September, 2009

Went with the "girl" neighbours to the Autumn Fair at Dundas Castle and on to the "Dakota" for lunch. Feeling pretty normal health wise but did not fit in any exercise today. Saw Sheila and Jimmy for a short while in the evening.

Thursday, 24th September, 2009

Domestic day with gym a.m. Finished the Fife Coastal Walk video.

Friday, 25th September, 2009

Went to St. Monan's with Jim and Irene and had lunch at the Seafood Restaurant followed by a short walk. Lovely enjoyable day.

Saturday, 26th September, 2009

Had a leisurely cycle through the Dalmeny Estate to South Queensferry and back via Craigie for refreshments. By chance Mhairi arrived with the two boys which was a bit difficult as they both had colds and Benjamin was on antibiotics for an ear infection. Fortunately we were just about to leave. Handed in Thomas's birthday present later in the day....without staying of course which is a pity.

Sunday, 27th September, 2009

Food shopping in the a.m. Parked at the far end of Inverkeithing in the p.m. and took a walk part way round the Fife Coast ending up at Aberdour. As we are planning to get some work done on our driveway/garden and enjoyed looking at some of the houses with a view to getting ideas.

Monday, 28th September, 2009

Slept till nearly 9 a.m today which must have been the result of my 3 hour walk yesterday. Have been feeling reasonably normal but I suppose my perception of what is normal has been reduced to a lower level. Mainy a domestic day as I want to get up t0 date before my last chemo scheduled for Friday.

Tuesday 29th September, 2009

Did exercises in the a.m. Domestic things around the house with a visit and drinks with the Dicksons later in the day. It was useful to discuss our quotes for the proposed work on our respective driveways. Felt a bit tired in the evening but that was probably due to having an extra glass of wine!

Wednesday, 30th September, 2009

Seem to be sleeping a 9 hour night these days. Still have the dizziness when puting my head on the pillow but nothing that interferes with what I want to do during the day. Cleaned all the glass doors this morning which was surprisingly tiring while John amused himself varnishing the back door. Decided to cycle down to Newhaven to get some fresh fish but ended up going on to the far side of Portobello as it was such a pleasant jaunt.

Well that is September over and last chemo tomorrow, hip, hip! Back to the top for October.

I do not know why the format has changed but I do not seem to be able to do anything about it. I also had some good photos of the Forth Bridge which it will not let me publish. The wonders of technology!

Diary - August

Well that's me into August already and I am getting through this! I had an interesting session with Tanya Mann yesterday who is the soft tissue specialist. She noted that I favoured my left eye as I turn my head slightly to the right to get maximum peripheral vision. I found this interesting and logical as I did have measles at the age of 3 which left me with a weakness in my right eye which has possibly caused me to make more use of the easier, stronger side. Going on from that she feels that it may be the reason that my neck muscles are weaker on the left. (Your hip bone is connected to your.....thigh bone) I am sure that I will be able to rectify this as all I have to do is use the other eye for the next 60 years!

Here we go with August:-

Saturday
1st August, 2009
Good start to the month as it is John's birthday today. We started with our gym exercises in the morning (how sad is that on your birthday!). Was not a very good day in the a.m. so took a run up to St. Andrews and had lunch in the "Seafood Restaurant". I remarked to the waitress that I thought the fish was a bit overcooked which prompted the chef to throw in our wine for nought. I did feel a bit guilty and assured the chef that his cooking was very good and we would be back. We thought the plates had just been left too long waiting to be served. He looked a bit happier!
The sun came out and it was a lovely afternoon for a wander round. Feeling good today and was full of plans for next year. I got the feeling that John was just humouring me on my plans to cycle John O'Groats to Lands End, hoping that I was talking through a whole in my steroids! Maybe he is right - time will tell?

Sunday 2nd August, 2009
Lazy morning apart from the food shopping. Had a 3 hour cycle and lunch which took in Fountain Bridge - Ratho - Kirkliston. Energy levels seem quite good on this new chemo but I have noticed that food is not so tasty or appealing which is maybe no bad thing for the weight.

Monday 3rd August, 2009
Mainly domestic day with the only additional exercise being a walk up to the Post Office.

Tuesday 4th August, 2009
Researched "Wendy Houses" this morning for the grandchildren. Had a walk to Cramond and a coffee in the p.m. which I felt was enough exercise as I was a bit tired. Still have a slight background nausea on this chemo but nothing that makes life too difficult.

Wednesday 5th August, 2009
Exercises first thing although only half the situps because of the slight dizziness. Felt the benefit of the exercise and went on to do some cooking. John painted the outside of the lounge windows in the afternoon while I did some painting in the garden of the, arguably, artisic variety. (at least I read a lot about it!) Should have done some gardening but was quite happy to sit this afternoon.
Have felt that my skin is more elastic looking on this chemo but maybe it is only my failing eyes. Theoretically my hair should now start to grow again but it will be many months before it is meaningful. I have taken to wearing a few false eyelashes at the corner of my eyes as I look a bit like a Chinchilla rabbit these days. I am not an ill person and I have no intention of looking like one.

Thursday, 6th August, 2009
Took a run to Pitlochry to check out the house and garden. Did some forking/weeding in the garden but although my energy levels were fine, the heat got to me and I had to stop after about 40 minutes and have a cold shower. Went on to Bruar for a look round and then a scenic drive back. Had a meal in the Rail Bridge at S. Queensferry.

Friday, 7th August, 2009
Appointment with the doctor this morning to discuss the dizziness which is still with me. Have decided to try the pills which I will start tomorrow. That's me "on the wagon" for a week as it says on the box to avoid alcohol. I am really t.....ed off as the antibiotics given to me by the hospital for my infection were resistent to my particular problem which means I have taken a whole week of pills that were of no use to me. Doctor has given me a prescription for the right ones but I will just hold on to them in case as things seem OK at the moment.
Was a beautiful day and we took ourselves plus bikes to Elie. Had lunch at the Ship Inn and cycled into St. Monans and then Pittenweem by the coast route. It happened to be their Arts Festival week and was very lively with buskers, food tents etc. Had a great afternoon wandering around the various art displays in all sorts of interesting locations from secret gardens to caves. Must remember to go back next year. Planned to cycle on to Anstruther but it was a bit hot for me so returned to Elie.

Saturday, 8th August, 2009
Went into town in the a.m. Started the "dizzy" pills and felt increasingly lethargic as the day progressed. It does say on the box they can cause drowsiness which is not what I need at the moment. Will stick with them and see how it goes.

Sunday, 9th August, 2009
Food shopping in the a.m. and caught up with some housework as it was an unpleasant day. Went for a run to Dobbie's in the afternoon for a look round and a coffee. Still feeling a bit lethargic so did not do any additional exercise over and above the housework.

Monday, 10t August, 2009
Still taking the "dizzy" pills but as with the last 2 days I feel increasing lethargic as the day progresses. Went into the gym late afternoon but only did half my usual as I felt so lack-lustre but will give it another go in the morning. Have decided to stop the pills after today as they are only serving to drag me down and I have not felt any advantages at all.

Tuesday, 11th August, 2009
Did not take any more pills and managed my exercises first thing no bother at all. Had soup and salad at Dougal Phillips and lazy afternoon. Looking forward to the wine tasting on a barge with the McCreadies followed by a meal.

Wednesday. 12th August, 2009
Had a great evening last night and feeling so much better now that I have stopped the pills. Took my bike back to Blackhall as the brakes were needing adjusted. I explained that I would need to be "King Kong" to stop myself on a steep hill. Cycled on to Ocean Terminal. Did some cooking in the afternoon.

Thursday, 13th August, 2009
Had coffee with Christina this morning. Wonderful off road cycle this afternoon to the National Trust Malleny Gardens at Balerno where we enjoyed a picnic in tranquil surroundings. Interesting route taking in everything from converted mills to Hollywood style houses with swimming pools and magnificent gardens.

Friday, 14th August,. 2009
Went out to the Gyle in the morning. Really foul day so lazy day with nothing much to report. Did decide to take the (correct) anti-biotics which I started today. Big chemo week next week which will take me three quarters of the way through - hip, hip.

Saturday, 15th August, 2009
Foul weather so both got the exercises over with first thing. Brightened up in the afternoon so took a walk to Craigie in the p.m. and had coffee outside. Am keeping away from the crowds in Edinburgh at the moment so had a romantic M & S meal for 2 at home. (Last of the big spenders at £10 including wine which was just about drinkable!)

Sunday 16th August, 2009
Did not do any exercise as I did a lot yesterday. Our gazebo was wrecked by the strong wind so went out to see if we could replace it but all gone now. It was only a cheap one to see me through the (so called) summer as I am not supposed to sit out in the sun because of the chemo. Get my blood test tomorrow before my next chemo on Wednesday.

Monday 17th August, 2009
Yet another bad day (weather wise). Had my blood test in the morning and went for a walk in the afternoon. A shower of rain encouraged us to visit the "Maltings" at Cramond but actually quite enjoyed the exhibition of local history. Had a cuppa at the cafe before returning.

Tuesday, 18th August, 2009
Quess what - neutrofils low again at 0.78 which means I have to go into the hospital earlier at 1 p.m. to have them rechecked. Had planned to go for a cycle with my sister but rain stopped play. Did gym work and had lunch at home instead. John went out to get more garden materials.

Wednesday, 19th August, 2009
Had an early lunch at Lauriston Farm as I like to have something substantial before chemo. Had the carvery which is very good value at £5. Netrofils were up to 1.34 which is enough to get the treatment but have been sent off with yet more antibiotics as well as my three days of anti-sickness and steroids. Feeling slightly nauseous and acidy but OK.

Thursday, 20th August, 2009
Having slept very well over the past couple of weeks the steroids kept me awake last night again. Had to be up fairly early to make sure we were "decent" for a delivery; burglar alarm service man; and an ipod collection. Have to say that Apple give a very good service as I my ipod decided that it needed a Password for the first time and I did not know what it was. Someone in "Timbuktoo" talked me through re-loading but it did not make any difference. They sent packaging which arrived the next day and a courier arrived the following day. Theoretically I get it returned within a week.
Did not feel brilliant this morning but was not sick like last time. Had a light lunch on one of John's very good omelettes and am feeling better as the day goes on. Seems to be that on this cocktail my system is clogged for the first half day. I note that once I start processing water everything improves. Having a lazy day nevertheless.

Friday, 21st August, 2009
Completely recovered today; did some joint housework and exercises; off into town by 11 a.m.
Had an early lunch at the Whisky Society in Queen Street before it got too busy, a walk round the Book Festival and some shopping. Very frustrating for me not being able to "do" the Festival thing so can't wait till next year. Oops - I forgot to take my pills with me so missed my slot for my second steroid today. Will continue with the anti sickness and if I am OK will try missing the second dose of steroids again tomorrow.

Saturday, 22nd August, 2009
Managed on half dose of steroids yesterday so decided to go for it and have another half dose today although this time I took one after breakfast and one after lunch rather than two together. Will continue with the regulation dose of anti-sickness though as they do not have to be taken with food and seem to be kinder to the stomach i.e. no acid. So far so good!

It's a lovely day so went out to play on our bikes. Cycled to Amondell and Calderwood Country Park in time for "elevenses". It is my favourite place at the moment as it has almost a spiritual ambiance with nothing to be heard beyond trees rustling, birds singing and water meandering somewhere in the background. The daffodils in the Spring are just out of this world. Enjoyed a coffee and Caramel Wafer "to go"on one of the seats outside the wee shop to give us enough blood sugar to get to our next "pit stop"for a pasta at "Izzi's" at the end of the tow path at Fountainbridge.
I used to have a Claxon on my bike instead of a bell which was great fun on the tow paths as even the cool duds, wired for sound, would jump sky-high on announcement of our overtaking. I think it was eventually confiscated as John is the front cyclist and was the one who suffered all the dirty looks. When I went to visit Derek in the bike shop for a new bell he only had two - one was "Bob the Builder" and the other "Barbie". How perfect was that! I like Derek as what you see is what you get but he has definitely had a charm bypass. I said I would take the two bells as one of them had my name on it. I chuckled to myself for the rest of the day as I could see by his reaction that his concept of "Barbie" did not equate to the OAP in front of him. Needless to say Bob the Builder, being of a more serious disposition, removed his picture!

Sunday 23rd August, 2009
Have been fine on half dose steroids which has had the added advantage of no reflux problems. Did food shopping in the a.m. and arrived at Jim and Irene's for lunch with the neighbours at 1 p.m. Great day as always with the group enjoying a few glasses (or so?) of wine and excellent food.

Monday, 24th August, 2009
Exercise this morning was limited to housework and car cleaning. Met Mhairi and the children at 'Craigie' in the afternoon as Grandpa had his cement mixer out which is not ideal for two inquisitive little boys! Had a lovely afternoon doing the Nature Trail which involved an hour's walk including post rubbing - a bit like brass rubbing only involving crayons and wooden posts with wildlife pictures on them. Prizes were won by all, followed by strawberry tarts and tea which is not so good for the diet!

Tuesday, 25th August, 2009
Seem to be on the go non stop today starting with accompanying Mhairi to the farm at Baldridge for business reasons. Went back to the Gyle for coffee, home for lunch and on to the dentist at Kirkliston for 2 p.m. Fiona called for a cuppa in the afternoon so enjoyed a chat outside for a while. Did not do any exercises today. John finished the base for the Wendy House so can go ahead and order one next week.

Wednesday, 26th August, 2009
Had an appointment with Tanya Mann this morning which I think has been quite useful although she is still reluctant to do too much to me because of the medical treatment at the moment. Dizziness is still with me although is only really a problem for the last 30 or so degrees when I
put my head on the pillow. I missed the delivery of my ipod yesterday but was in today to receive it. They have given me a new one and it only took 5 days! The downside of getting a new one is that it has to be reloaded again.

Thursday, 27th August, 2009
As my neutr0fils had been low at my last chemo I was given anti-biotics to take for a week starting yesterday as one is supposed to be at the most vulverable time 7 - 14 days afterwards. Had roofers here today which kept us in. Did exercises in the a.m. but at a fairly pedestrian rate as I have felt a bit tired over the last couple of days. I am not sure that it is not because I am forgetting not to dash around! Spent a frustrating afternoon trying to reload the ipod which eventually worked.

Friday, 28th August, 2009
Stuck in today because of tradesdmen and also delivery of John's computer which was on the blink. As I am on antibiotics this week we thought we would risk popping into the BMW new premises party. Stayed for a couple of glasses of champagne but left when it became too busy and finished off the evening at the carvery at Lauriston Farm. Not being a racey place it suited our purpose not to mention wonderful value for £5!

Saturday 29th August, 2009
Was a reasonable day so cycled to Livingstone Village where we had a baked potato. It was
r-e-a-l-l-y hard going cycling into the wind on the Broxburn road and was glad to stop for a coffee at Almondell. Had a great evening with some of the neighbours at the Burgess.

Sunday 30th August, 2009
Went to Roslin Glen for a walk. Very interesting taking in some of the old mill ruins where they used to make gunpowder (largest in Scotland). Very disappointed to find the coffee shop had gone at the Chapel.....and Tom Hanks was not there either! Had a light lunch at Dobbie's and a lazy afternoon after my 4 and a half hours cycling yesterday.

Guess which one is the elephant?

Monday, 31st August, 2009

Another dreich day so did some food shopping. John is making some strawberry tarts this afternoon so I suppose I will just have to eat some. It's a tough life!

I should have documented that I have had a bit of a back problem the last few days and feel that I am in need of some osteopath treatment. I will have a dialogue with the medical people on Thursday as I have a routine appointment with the surgeon then. Tanya and I have both felt I should not muck about until my chemo is finished at the end of September.
On a lighter note - isn't this cute? It was taken at a picnic for all the children born around the same time. Mathew is third from the right - do you think Lola is gong to be a showgirl? (second from the left). If you right click on this picture and chose the "open link" option you will see it better.

Diary - July

That is another month ticked off. I am still doing well and although I know I am not one hundred percent I can live a reasonably normal life. I do notice that my skin is a bit more sensitive e.g. taking toast out of the toaster. I also feel that I have to wait until hot drinks cool a bit.
Here comes July:-

Wednesday 1st July, 2009
Feeling a bit of a fraud again but I am into my third week of chemo number 3 so I should be on an upswing again - theoretically! The second week after each chemo is supposed to be the difficult one but I have to say that I have not particularly noticed although, in general, some days are better than others regardless of the week.
Had a lovely lunch in Moray Place Gardens to celebrate Andrew Cubie's knighthood.

Thursday 2nd July, 2009
Popped round to see Sheila J who has just come out of hospital and looking great. Went on to meet Heather for lunch at the "Loch Fyne". Was feeling a bit out of sorts as the day progressed mainly due to the heat.

Friday 3rd July, 2009
Business meeting in Glasgow in the morning. Watched Andy Murray's semi final at Wimbledon- sadly! Exercises p.m.

Saturday 4th July, 2009
Cycled to Musselburgh and back. Found a shady spot for a sandwich and ice-cream from Luca. Great "American" evening with the McCreadies.

Sunday 5th July, 2009
Made it to Church this morning as I should be at my most resilient just before next chemo. Seem to have a bit of a rash on my neck and upper chest even although I was covered from the sun yesterday. May have been my cycling top was not quite sun proof or maybe just the heat. I am afraid that peely-wally is the new bronze for me this year! Domestic things in the p.m. as I may not feel like doing anything later in the week ....and on a Sunday, tut, tut!

Monday, 6th July, 2009
Had my blood test to check the white blood cells prior to Wednesday's chemo. Went into town later in the morning and had a visit from Mhairi and the boys in the afternoon. We stayed outside and had tea under the gazebo even through the showers. It is rather sad that I have to keep the grandchildren out of the house in case of infection as they always have a runny something....or about to. Gym late afternoon.

Tuesday, 7th July, 2009
Phoned Ward 1 for my blood test results to find the same problem again! Neutrofils 0.95 and they won't administer chemo unless they are over 1. Will have to go in early tomorrow to get another test which will hopefully be O.K. I am told that the chemo is responsible for attacking the neutrofils but that they should be back over 1 after three weeks. My theory is that perhaps my personal cycle is just a day or two more than that. I note that although I have always been under 1 two days before schedule it is improving i.e. 0.75; 0.85; 0.95. Maybe next time I will make it? Did lots of cooking for my freezer today and gym in the late afternoon.

Wednesday, 8th July, 2009
Chemo day and another blood test around 1 p.m. Neutrofils now over one i.e. 1.22 which was enough to get my chemo. The hospital do like them to be over 1.25 so I am again armed with antibiotics for a week along with the usual 3 days of steroids and anti sickness pills. Never mind it is the last of the Epirubicin and I am doing fine!

Thursday, 9th July, 2009
Forecast was good and we decided to go to Pitlochry to do some gardening. Unfortunately too many showers stopped us doing all we wanted but we had a nice lunch at Killicrankie and a scout round Bruar. Did not have time for any exercises.

Friday, 10th July, 2009
Still on the steroids so cleaned the house while I was "high". John was busy digging a trench for a field drain to create a border at the far side of the tennis court this morning. We took a walk to Cramond in the p.m. and had a coffee.

Saturday 11th July, 2009
Took spare bike in for servicing first thing. Cycled to Almondell and Calderwood Country Park which I always find very atmospheric. Took a sandwich and had a coffee "to go". Had a barbeque at home in the evening. Hope to sleep well tonight!

Sunday, 12th July, 2009
Having had a three (ish) hour cycle yesterday have had a "pottering" day although am none the worse of yesterday's exercise. Bit of acid after lunch but that seems to happen for a few days after chemo probably because of the steroids. I did take one of the pills for it today but find that iced water is probably just as helpful. Have my midway appointment with the Oncology Doctor tomorrow a.m. so will talk through my lsit of inevitable questions.

Monday, 13th July, 2009
Met with the Oncology Doctor this morning and went over my questions. She assured me that the fact that the neurofils are low shows that the chemo is doing what it is supposed to do. Was checked over and all seems well.
Dropped off Jim's bike which I collected along with my own from the cycle shop. Enjoyed meeting his son, Gordon who has been through a horrendous cancer journey. Makes me very humble with my mamby-pamby problems!
I think I have a bit of a cold today so was not feeling my best and only did small bit of exercise. No temperature though so hopefully I will be able to exercise tomorrow all being well.

Tuesday, 14th July, 2009
Yep - have got a cold but managed to sleep not too badly last night. Decided to have a lazy day so no exercise. Feeling a little under the weather (as one does with a cold) but no temperature so far. John has been playing with his cement mixer....between showers which is a bit frustrating for him. Caught up with some paperwork.

Wednesday, 15th July, 2009
Slept quite well as I was spoiled with a hot toddy before going to bed. Still have the cold which has probably improved marginally. Nevertheless had a jolly lunch with the "walking" girls at Loch Fyne Restaurant. Hotfooted it over to Mhairi's flat later in the afternoon as the engineeer called to say he was arriving to service the boiler which we thought was happening tomorrow.

Thursday 16th July, 2009
Met John in town after his business meeting and had lunch in the New Club. Felt a bit tired but had a cycle in the afternoon taking in an ice-cream at the Granton Road. Managed to shake off the rest of the cobwebs coming home via Cramond foreshore! Feel I am on top of the cold which is better again today.

Friday, 17th July, 2009
Horrible wet day so took a trip down to Dirleton and had lunch at the "Open Arms". Still feeling a bit tired but it is the middle week of my 4th chemo. Will do some exercise which usually perks me up a bit.

Saturday, 18th July, 2009
Had a fairly lazy day as I had felt a bit tired over the last two days but enjoyed an evening with the neighbours at the golf club in the evening.

Sunday, 19th July, 2009
Exercises in the morning. Mhairi came over in the p.m. with the children for afternoon tea and a trip down to the swing park. Felt generally more energy today.

Monday, 20th July, 2009
Fairly standard domestic day with me working on the inside and John on the outside. Did not do any additional exercise today.

Tuesday, 21st July, 2009
Trying to sort out a problem at Mhairi's flat with the neighbour downstairs. Meeting with two of the other neighbours (one today and one tomorrow) to see if we can resolve things. Reminiscent of the "stair heid brawl". Feeling fine in myself and completed exercises quite easily this afternoon.

Wednesday 22nd July, 2009
Dropped John off at the airport and went on to visit Liz Wood's midden! Had a coffee with she and Denise and a demonstration on how to proceed with my new compost equipment. Met with second neighbour today, both having been very supportive. Gym in the p.m.

Thursday, 23rd July, 2009
Woke up this morning to find myself with some serious vertigo. It became manageable and I drove to Collessie as planned to have lunch with Irene Springham. Had a really lovely day talking over old times and listening to our favouite Country Music. The dizziness returned at bedtime again when I tried to lie down. Seemed to affect me seriously only when moving from standing to lying or vice versa.

Friday, 24th July, 2009
Managed to get an appointment with the doctor first thing who prescribed me some pills for the dizziness which I could keep as a standby. He said that 4 doses of Epirubicin was significant and would attack my whole system so I am feeling reassured. Have not had to take the pills so far and did my gym exercises with Heather who also joined us for lunch. Had a mild problem with sit-ups.

Saturday 25th July, 2009
Still a bit of dizziness on standing up first thing but balance was OK on my bike. Cycled almost 4 hours today firstly to Almondell Country Park for a coffee to go and then along the tow paths to Fountainbridge where we had a pasta in "Izzi's".

Sunday, 26th July, 2009
Dizziness still there but less. Think I am getting another infection so have been in touch with NHS 24 who have made an appoinment at the Western General. Yes - more antibiotics prescribed although they did not have the same ones as before. I will check that this is OK as I am at Cramond tomorrow anyway for my 3 weekly blood test.

Monday 27th July, 2009
Went for my pre chemo blood test this morning. I have just noticed that my infection has happened 5 days before my chemo. One benefit of keeping this diary is that I can look back and I note that the last infection occurred also 5 days before a chemo. I think I must be out of sync as one is supposed to be less vulnerable during the 3rd week. This may also explain the low neutrofils during my 3rd week. Perhaps my natural cycle for processing the chemo is e.g. 3 weeks and 2 days? (Just a theory). Shopping in the morning and met Mhairi and the boys at Craigie for a coffee in the p.m. Gym late afternoon.

Tuesday 28th July, 2009
Phoned to check my blood results and glad to hear they are 1.59 this time which means I do not have to get another test before the chemo. Am a bit apprehensive about my new "cocktail" tomorrow as although it is considered generally less vicious it could be the hammer blow for me.
Went into town for shopping and had lunch at Cafe Andaluz. Found ourselves at the next table to Allan and Jette so we were able to put the world to right.

Wednesday, 29th July, 2009
Did stint in the gym followed by a visit from NFU re house insurance. Big chemo day so had a substantial lunch. Dizziness is still with me (hasn't it always been!) to some extent but the medical people are insistent that it has nothing to do with the chemo and have suggested that it may be to do with the disc narrowing in my neck which is a separate issue. I have been aware that I have cricked my neck so am trying to get an appointment with Tanya to "straighten" me out.
The chemo session, although a new "cocktail", was administered in the same way as before. The only difference was that the liquid was yellow and clear which was a bit less alarming than the previous vibrant red toxic substance. So far so good but early days yet.

Thursday, 30th July, 2009
I am definitely not playing the "Glad Game" today as it would read, "I kicked the neighbours cat!" ((just joking Irene M - I would not do that to Ginger!).
Was sick after breakfast then again mid morning in spite of having taken more anti-sickness pills. I have managed to keep down my lunch which was only 1 egg scrambled and a small fruit yoghurt. Our theory today is that they left me rather long on the saline drip yesterday (a whole bag more than usual). I had put on 4 lbs. this morning which suggests that my system was clogged. Am feeling better now having had a lazy day and I am again able to process liquid.
Have not had any reply from Tanya, the "back quack", with a suggested appointment but maybe she is on holiday.

Friday, 31st July, 2009
Having gained 4 lbs. yesterday I have lost 5 lbs. today which fits with the theory of being clogged. In great spirits today although the dizziness is still with me when I change position from lying to standing. Managed to get an appointment with Tanya who is an ".......ist" specialising in soft tissue. Although the session was useful in many ways I do not think it has addressed the dizziness but at least I have moved on in the process of elimination. I think my problem must be "laborinthitis" which I have experienced twice before in my adult years. I have not taken the pills the doctor gave me for the dizziness (as I am already rattling) and I can manage very well without. I will, however, make a further appointment with him to discuss.

That's the end of July - back to the top again for August, 2009

Monday, 1 June 2009

Diary - June

That's May finished already and so far so good. However, just reading some of the literature again it would suggest that the chemo does not really start to be effective until 4 - 6 weeks into treatment which means I am not out of the woods yet. I do expect it to get tougher but strangely I found the second chemo easier than the first. The anti-acid pills helped a lot but I also had a lot of water and was well hydrated before the second dose was administered. Don't know if that was relevant but I would certainly try it again next time.

Here comes June:-

Monday 1st June, 2009
Hot and sticky air overnight which was not good for restful sleep. I seemed to surf through consciousness about once an hour all night. Felt OK in the morning though and met Mhairi with the two boys at the zoo for a picnic. Walked about, with some periods of rest, for some 3 hours. I asked Benjamin (germ-bag No. 2) if he liked my new hair-do. He has in the past given me the benefit of his advice on how to flatten my hair but his cursory glance suggested that the subject was not very interesting. (I will take that as a yes, then?) If it were not so hot today I would have been quite pleased with my tea cosy as I was challenged on asking for a concession! That made my day and they did not even have to ask me if I wanted to add a donation to the zoo ticket surprisingly enough! Had a saunter and ice cream at South Queensferry after dinner.
The "builder" of the family finished the base for two sheds at the bottom of the garden and some paving. He now has a compactor in his gun sight.

Tuesday, 2nd June, 2009
Had a better sleep last night although felt slightly more delicate this morning which is all probably the result of the steroids having been processed out of my system. Did my gym stint gently but felt the benefit of it so am glad I made the effort. I have a turban thing which I wear for my exercises. John kindly says it is very "Greta Garbo" although the reality is I am more like a fugitive from the "Steamie" but at least it is not forever. Both ready for a restful day so drove down the coast to Dirleton and had lunch at Deveau's. Lovely day.

Wednesday, 3rd June, 2009
Dropped John near town for his dental work. Had planned to do domestic things and exercises but Marcus turned up unexpectedly. He is having a week sailing on the Clyde with some friends and we had not expected to see him until Sunday. He managed to get an earlier flight so spent the morning and lunch with us before being picked up by his friends. Did some housework after he left but decided that was enough as I am out "partying" tonight! Had a lovely evening at Anne Irons birthday bash. Unfortunately John had 20+ stitches following his dental work so was a bit under the weather. His face was very swollen and sore but he insisted that I go with the neighbours as planned. Enjoyed a really good meal ( and company!) with Jim, Irene, Allan and Jette at "Prestonfield House".

Thursday 4th June, 2009
Met the "walking" girls for coffee at the National Trust at 10.30a.m. Discussed all our ailments although Suzanne never seems to have any! Discovered that Denise, who has been through something similar to me, was also aware of her lymph node drainage being slow recently. I had thought it was to do with the chemo but we have concluded that it is affected by the hot weather. Sorry that Liz could not make it as she had "bigger fish to fry". I am very jealous as she and her husband are going cycling on the French tow paths. I am wondering if, when I get back to full strength, she would do John O'Groats to Lands End with me as it would give me something to aim for once I get over this blip. My nephew, John Braid did it and if you want to access his experience you can find it at http:/johnandjamieontour.blogspot.com
Washed and hoovered out the car but only did 15 minutes in the gym as I felt a bit tired. Poor John is still in discomfort from his stitches so it is cheese souffle, spinach and mash potatoes for us tonight.
Still awaiting our new grandchild who will be induced on Monday if he does not appear before then.

Friday, 5th June, 2009
Slept reasonably well although woke up quite early with the brightness of the morning. Felt a bit tired so only did 50% of gym exercises and some light housework. Have been keeping away from crowded public places but as it was a wet day today decided we would risk going to the morning showing of "Startrek" as it would be quiet. Good decision as it was almost a private viewing. We were pleased that at least the young "Scottie" had a believable Scottish accent although the old "Spok" would have benefitted from a visit to the Dental Specialists in Rose Street for his dental work! Had a bit of acid reflux today but I had a baked potato with vegetarian haggis at lunch time so that is probably what caused it. I had forgotten I was off the spicy things.

Saturday, 6th June, 2009
Felt better than yesterday and did full stint in the gym. Went out for a light lunch and some plants. Had a seat for a while in the afternoon and then planted out some of the pots in the garden.
Hair still seems to be growing to some degree but could probably be described as a "struggle of hair". Annoyingly I am still having to shave my legs but that is probably too much information!
Had the M & S dinner for two which was really very good especially for £10!

Sunday, 7th June, 2009
Feeling really good today and completed full gym session. Picked Mhairi up and took her to the airport. She is going hiking, biking and white water rafting in Slovenia! Just hoping health and safety has reached them so gave her a lecture about not jumping out of aeroplanes as she did once before as a student!
Did a couple of hours gardening and had a barbeque. Marcus who was sailing round Mull, Islay etc. did not get home till after 9 p.m. as they were becalmed. He seems to have been burned, frozen in equal measure but enjoyed the break with the boys.

Monday 8th June, 2009
Had a lazy morning with Marcus whose flight was not until the middle of the day. Morag's big day today and she is now in hospital ready to be induced. We had a dialogue mid morning but have not heard anything since and it is now 7 p.m. Did my gym session this morning but have had a fairly lazy day since. We are all anxiously awaiting news! John's slabbing under the rotary drier is coming on well.

Tuesday 9th June, 2009
Big relief - Mathew Macqueen Wand arrived at 12.20a.m. weighing in at 7lbs 12 ozs. (Yes, Morag's married name is "Wand" which is really just "Ward" with a little magic added!) Labour seems to be more intense when induced so it was a long day for Morag from 2 pm. onwards. I am eagerly awaiting the pictures but Phil says he looks like everybody else.....thank goodness!
There has been enough excitement for one day so rest of it has been pretty routine with exercises and domestic things for me.

Wednesday 10th June, 2009
Here he is - first picture taken by mobile 'phone!

Mundane sort of day with exercises and domestic things in the a.m. Ordered two compost bins now that the "Royal we" have cleared the tip at the bottom of the garden. Looking for some guidance from Marsali - the family "eco warrior" - as to how we proceed.
Have ordered my second (but same) wig as it passed the grandchildren test. I am also looking for something that I can wear under a cycling helmet as the "tea cosy"combination is not good. Tried a "See you Jimmy" hat but not enough hair at the side which made it more like "See you French Foreign Legion"! I am still on the case.

Thursday, 11th June, 2009
Visited sister Heather in Musselburgh for coffee and lunch. Had a brisk hour's walk which is my exercise for today. Pooled our hat collection to find something suitable for her to wear to the garden party.
Received more pictures of Mathew today but am a bit sad that I cannot just get up and go and see them. Will make up for it in a few months.
Heather cut out an article from the Times on turmeric which is said to be beneficial for anyone on radiotherapy amongst other claims (e.g. Alzheimer's disease). It is American of course but I will probably give it a try when I get to that stage on the basis that it will not do me any harm. If anyone wants a copy of the article please get in touch.

Friday 12th June, 2009
Went in to see Anna next door for coffee in the a.m. Usual gym and domestic things in the p.m. By evening had a worry that I may have a wee infection. After consultation with NHS 24 and the Oncology Registrar was asked to go to the Royal at 1.20 a.m! All is well and I am on antibiotics for 3 days. Just a bit worried that it will conflict with my treatment next week. Can't speak to any medical people until Monday so I do not yet know whether I should cancel my pre chemo blood test.

Saturday 13th June, 2009
Went shopping this morning for something for our new grandson. We were supposed to be going to the McKee's barbeque tonight but have cancelled. As there are very heavy showers it will be under cover with a lot of people crowded together. We will look forward to seeing them on their own in the near future though. Am a wee bit tired today as we did not get to bed until 2 a.m.

Sunday 14th June, 2009
The people below us at Pitlochry had a concern that they had a damp patch and that it might be from our flat. John went up today but all is O.K. Called up to Penny and Ian to deliver flowers I had planned to take last night. Did my usual exercises this morning and have had no problem from the infection. Managed to speak to a medical person today who said the anti-biotics should not affect my blood test tomorrow.

Monday, 15th June, 2009
Was very impressed with the system this morning as I had a call from Dr. Joliffe around 9a.m. to follow up on Friday night's hospital visit. He also said that the antibiotics should not affect my pre chemo blood test. It is "pin cushion" week and had the blood test at 10.30 a.m followed by the result telephoned by Dr. Joliffe in the afternoon. Can't believe that my blood count is down below 1 again! No doubt I will have to go to Ward 1 early on Wedesday to get it redone before the chemo. I had no alcohol at all on Sunday so can't blame the reading on that this time.
Went into town with John in the morning and he picked Mhairi up from the airport in the p.m. while I did my exercises. Her holiday seems to have been a big success.

Tuesday, 16th June 2009
Had a morning appointment to get my new wig fitted. It is supposed to be the same but I suppose each one is unique to some degree. We had lunch at the West End prior to a business appointment at 2 p.m. Had a strawberry tart at Craigie which is very naughty considering I am needing to lose a stone in weight! Well this is not the time to do it anyway. Domestic things and gym later in the p.m. Think I may have solved the cycling hat problem.

Wednesday, 17th June, 2009
Imagine having to get chemo on your birthday! Spent the morning from around 9a.m. at the hospital as I had to have a re-run of my blood test. Neutrofils only read 1.26 but was enough to get my chemo. I have been given a week of anti-biotics as I may still have a bit of infection but am feeling OK in myself. I now have had 3 out of the 4 "nasties" so not long to go. Doesn't time go quickly when you are enjoying yourself?!
Went to the Loch Fyne Restaurant for lunch and glass of wine. Felt quite tired this afternoon but I have previously had the chemo in the p.m. which I think is better (but we won't mention the wine).
Thanks to everyone for remembering my birthday - I feel quite a star today! Pleased to see Jim this afternoon although missed Irene who has been exposed to infection so did not come. Also sorry to miss Sheila J who is also keeping her germs to herself. Having a rest from exercise today.
Had a bad end to the day as I smashed a bottle of flax oil when taking it out of the fridge. Oily glass in smithereens everywhere even under the skirting boards - ugh! I read on the Internet that cancer liked an acid environment. Allegedly a teaspoonful of cold pressed flax oil straight from the fridge twice a day helps. I did run it by the chemists at the hospital and they did not see a problem with it. It may not do any good but I am prepared to try it as it won't do any harm,

Thursday 18th June, 2009
Felt a little bit of indigestion during the first part of the night but settled down. Whey-hey
three days on steroids. Now I know why there is an objection to athletes taking them! Cleaned my house today whilst I was on a high but decided I would not do exercise as well. I have only heard of one other person who seems to be affected in the same way as me with the steroids and she was apparently up painting her kitchen at 2 a.m. I hope John is not planning to leave the paint pots out!
My car told me there was a fault with the engine so booked it into the garage this morning. We went in convoy and on to the builders yard - again! I am the proud owner of a new rotary drier and the bases for the new sheds are all ready:-

Sorry I can't get the pictures separated - technology problem!

Friday, 19th June, 2009
Slept quite well even with steroids but am only going to take one today and see how it goes. Hospital did say I could try it. Will continue with the lesser anti-sickness pills for the allotted three days just in case as I do not want to change too many things at once.
Collected car and did bits of shopping and domestic things. Back to my gym routine today.

Saturday, 20th June, 2009
Thought we might go to Pitlochry this weekend but weather forecast is not too good. Went into town to do some shopping and had light lunch. Have walked about quite a bit so not planning any extra exercise today. Did not take any more steroids and am managing to hang on in there without them. Had a quiet evening and barbeque at home. Lost half a tooth + filling (nothing to do with Donald Russell's very tender meat!). Will wait till Monday to ask if there are any implications in having dental injections.

Sunday, 21st June, 2009
Feeling a bit light headed today so having a lazy day. Got the paints (as in artist, except not) out after many years but did not get very far as some of the tubes had disintegrated. Felt better as the day went on and was able to enjoy a barbeque with Penny and Ian at Colinton in their lovely garden.

Monday, 22nd June, 2009
Went for a picnic with John, Mhairi and the two boys to Amandell Country Park. Weather not the best but was warm enough to kick a ball around. Spoke to someone at Oncology at the Western General about tooth. Big problem as I can't have an injection and they are not even keen about a dressing without first having a blood test and results to check my neutrofil level. How do I co-ordinate that when everyone has a full diary? I go into a particularly vulverable period during the middle week between chemos apparently. My own dentist has agreed to fit me in at 10.00 a.m. tomorrow. Have just had a suggestion that she speak to the oncology doctor directly so I am leaving on a cliff hanger today as it is now 5.45 and everyone has gone home?!! Have felt generally very perky today for some reason so I am off down to the gym while I am still feeling in good form.

Tuesday, 23rd June, 2009
Oncology and dentist agreed that they would allow a basic dressing on the problem tooth. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will hold until after all the chemo finishes. I am still on antibiotics until tomorrow anyway so hopefully that should cover any potential problems. Pottered around the garden today, complete with two pairs of gloves in case of infection, but felt a bit tired mainly due to the heat. Not good being under this tea cosy today! Marcus's big birthday today but he is not having is "do" until later in the year.

Wednesday, 24th June, 2009
Slept until nearly 9.30 a.m.! Was spoiled with tea and toast in bed and a lazy morning. Went out to buy our two sheds at B & Q at Hermiston who are so much more helpful than Homebase. Discovered at the beginning of the week that O.A.P's get a 10% discount on Wednesdays. On arrival we found that the said sheds had an extra 15% discount as well! Not only that, all their patio furniture was half price. We had decided that we did need some bits so made full use of the offer including a cheap gazebo to let me sit out without being in the sun. I have to be careful as too much sun can react with the chemo. Celebrated our ill-gotten gains by having lunch out. John back to the dentist late afternoon and I am off to do my exercises or I will never sleep tonight after oversleeping last night.

Thursday, 25th June, 2009
The inevitable flat packs arrived at 8.30 this morning. Had to take two of the chairs back to be replaced as the holes were in the wrong place for the screws which was a pain but everything is looking good now. Started off feeling a little tired but managed my domestic things and felt better as the day went on. Thinking we may cycle to the Highland Show show tomorrow if I am feeling OK so will not do any further exercise today. Went to the McCreadies to have a "glass" to celebrate Jim's birthday but it turned into more of a party and we enjoyed a super evening along with some of the family.

Friday, 26th June, 2009
Felt well enough to cycle to the Royal Highland Show via Dalmeny and back. Really enjoyed the day with a dressed crab "to go"; an ice-cream and a sing-song with the Alexander Brothers. I have to say that, like myself, they have seen better days but nostalgic nevertheless. I cycled in a cotton cap under my helmet which covered my ears. Must have looked like a Nun but as nobody genuflected I must have got away with it. Found a disabled toilet at the show to change into my wig just in case I freaked out the locals. Big thank-you to Denise for sending me a fringe for under my helmet which arrived today.

Saturday/Sunday 27/28th June, 2009
Nothing much to report and felt fine after my cycle yesterday. I thought I would be tired enough to sleep well but it was not the case. Do not know why my sleeping pattern is so random. It was a wet weekend so were around the house mostly and the garden sheds are now up. Had a meal at the New Club on Saturday night and did exercise on Sunday only. Only a week and a half now until I get my final "nasty" chemo!

Monday 29th June, 2009
Went up to Morningside to shop and visit the alterations shop. Later in the morning we cycled to South Queensferry for light lunch and on to Craigie for a very small strawberry tart and tea. Feeling very good after my cycle - hope I still do tomorrow!

Tuesday, 39th June, 2009
Felt fine today after my cycle but did not do any specific exercise. Tried my hand at Sushi making as we were having John and Fiona for afternoon tea. Spent the afternoon in the garden over tea.

Back to the top for July!
